Faith-Filled Fridays: Doomscrolling and doomsurfing

Are you guilty of doomscrolling and doomsurfing? I know I am.

“Doomscrolling and doomsurfing are new terms referring to the tendency to continue to surf or scroll through bad news, even though that news is saddening, disheartening or depressing,” according to www.Merriam-Webster.com “. . .During times of crisis and uncertainty, some of us pay more attention to the news, looking for answers. And this might not surprise you, but we have to say it: a lot of the news is bad.”

The COVID-19 pandemic. Unemployment. Crime. War. Natural disasters. The list of bad news goes on and on.

Not surprisingly, doomscrolling and doomsurfing can cause us to feel anxious or depressed. Sadly, children, ages 6-12, are also affected.

But there is a solution and it’s a simple one: Instead of doomscrolling or doomsurfing, read God’s word.

Let’s come up with new terms like joyscrolling or goodnewssurfing. After all, scripture teaches us to find the joy and the good all around us.

Philippians 4:8 (KJV):

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there by any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things.”

Don’t have a Bible at home? Don’t worry. Among many, one place to read God’s word online is www.kingjamesbibleonline.org and there are numerous free Bible apps like Bible Gateway, Literal Word and Olive Tree.

So, exchange doomscrolling for joyscrolling and goodnewssurfing for doomsurfing. Your mental health will thank you.

Be encouraged.
