Pamela’s Prompts: Favorite Halloween Costume

Halloween is only a few days away, and I’m always transported back to my childhood or to when our daughter was young. I loved going trick-or-treating. Where I grew up in West Texas, though, it was always a mixed bag when it came to weather – oppressively hot or rainy and cold. Nothing in between.

Come Monday night, our neighborhood will have its usual Halloween night activities. Almost everyone sits on their porch to hand out candy and visit with neighbors. Kids in costume are everywhere. It’s a great time! I love seeing creative costumes, especially those that are homemade.

That brings me to today’s prompt.

Pamela’s Prompts: Favorite Halloween Costume

Here’s what I wrote:

When our daughter was young, she showed dogs through the American Kennel Club’s junior showmanship program. She also helped at a kennel in the Hill Country.

One day at the kennel, I spied several empty dog food sacks. I had an idea! I asked my daughter if she would like to go trick-or-treating as a sack of dog food, and she readily agreed.

It was, by far, the least expensive costume she’d ever worn. All it took was hot gluing a couple of black, elastic shoulder straps onto the sack and cutting some arm holes. Katherine already had a dog collar, a large dog bone, and a dog dish (which she used as her trick-or-treat bag). The only thing I purchased was a pair of harlequin tights to match the black and white pattern on the bowl.

Voila!

P.S. The other children in the photo were our sweet neighbors’ kids. We miss them!

Now, it’s your turn. Set a timer for 15 minutes and write. Ready? Set? Go!

Let me know your favorite Halloween costume.

Happy writing!
